How to play the imposter game
You need one phone and three or more people in the same room. No app, no signup — everything runs in your browser.
Add the players
Type everyone's name and pick a word pack. Three to twenty people can play.
Pass the phone
Each player taps their card to see the secret word. One player sees IMPOSTER instead and has no idea what the word is.
Give one word each
Go around the table twice. Every player says a single word connected to the secret word. The imposter has to bluff from what they hear.
Vote and reveal
Talk it out, vote for the suspect, and the phone shows whether you got them. If caught, the imposter can still steal the win by guessing the word.
The imposter game for friends, family and game nights
Everything runs in the browser on the phone you already have in your hand. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, and no second device needed.
What is the imposter word game?
Everyone in the group is shown the same secret word — everyone except one person. That player is the imposter, and they have to talk their way through the round without ever learning what the word is. The rest give short, careful clues to prove they know it, while watching for the one answer that doesn't quite fit.
Built-in word generator
You never have to think up words yourself. The generator pulls from five packs — food and drink, animals, places, movies and TV, and everyday objects — and it remembers what your device has already played, so a word won't come back until the whole pack has been used. More words and packs get added over time, and they show up automatically the next time you open the page.
How a round actually plays out
Everyone gathers around one phone. Each player taps their card, reads it privately, taps again to close it, and passes the phone on. Then you go around the table twice, one single word per person. After that you argue, vote, and the phone tells you whether you got the right person. A full round takes about three minutes.
Why one word per turn matters
The single-word rule is what makes the game work. A sentence gives the imposter far too much to copy; one word forces everyone to be specific enough to prove themselves but vague enough not to hand the word over. That tension is where the good rounds come from — and it's why players who say something too obvious end up under suspicion themselves.
Good for parties, classrooms and long trips
Nobody is eliminated, so nobody sits out waiting for the next game. It works at a dinner table, in a classroom, in a car, or at a party where people keep joining halfway through — hand the phone to a new group and they'll have it after one round. Three players is enough to start, and it still holds up at twenty.
Ready to find the imposter?
Scroll up, type in the names, pick a pack and start. Everyone at the table will see the same word in a moment — except one of you.
Frequently asked questions
Is the imposter game free?
Yes. The whole game is free, runs in your browser, and there is no signup, download or account.
How many players do I need?
Three at a minimum, up to twenty. It works best with five to eight people, where there are enough clues to compare but everyone still gets a turn quickly.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It's a web page. Open it on one phone and pass that phone around — the other players don't need anything.
Will I get the same words again?
No. The game remembers which secret words your device has already used and only repeats them once the whole pack is finished.
Can I play with two imposters?
Yes, from six players on you can switch to two imposters. They don't know about each other, which makes the discussion much harder to read.
What if the imposter is caught?
They get one last chance: if they can say the secret word out loud correctly, they steal the win from the group.
Can I add my own words?
Not yet. The word packs are built in for now and new words are added regularly. Custom packs are planned.
Can we play from different houses?
Not right now — this version is built for one phone passed around a table. Everyone needs to be in the same room.
